Corsage Pins are usually found in the bridal craft section
Silk Sewing pins are in the sewing area
Needles of variable sizes are by the embroidery floss
I like to use tacky glue.  But this is a personal choice...use the one you like   best.  Scissors are a personal choice too.  I like a small narrow blade and a Fiskar childerns size pair.  I like a metal ruler with lots of measurement lines. Tweezer help in placement of quilling.

Solid Rolls and Dots

1 .  I use a silk pin to achieve the smallest center. I cut one   end  of the paper and tear the other.  Tight rolls are glued   without loosening the roll.  I roll from the cut end and put the glue at the torn end.  2. Using a larger needle makes a bigger center, which you can use to make a solid teardrop.

  3.  Dot(s) shown here are made of 3/16" wide (narrow) paper.  Patterns will   adjust the length and width.  These are rolled on a silk sewing pin.  Roll on   pin.  Leave on pin as you place a small dot of glue to the torn end of paper,   finish the roll, and hold in place until set.  Place a small dot of glue where you   will place the dot on your work.  Place pin point in center of glue and slide dot off the pin and over glue dot.  Reverse pin and use round head of pin to gently press in place.

Loose Coils

Size of pin or needle will be recommended in the patterns. Cut and tear as you would for a solid roll, roll from cut end, and let the coil go when finished rolling. Glue torn end.  Here is a list of shapes you can make with a loose coil.  They are easily shaped by pinching and shaping with your fingers. For more shapes go to www.naqg.org.

'S' Scrolls

Up curled 'S'         Down curled 'S'

I cut at both ends for this ‘S’ scroll; I like the clean line this gives. Patterns will give you the length and width. Patterns will also tell you which to center over your work, an up curled ‘S’ or a down curled ‘S’.  I use the corsage pin to roll these. Both ends are rolled towards the center from opposite sides. Then gently unroll and shape.

Crescent Cuts

Double Crescent                                                Single

These are called double and single crescent cuts.  First, cut to the length you need.  Fold if it’s needed. Then cut a curve at the end(s).  A crescent cut gives added depth to quilling.

Simple ‘V’ Scrolls

Cut paper to length. Fold paper in half. Curl ends with fingers or tweezers toward outsides. (Like Christmas ribbon). Adjust to look nice. Giving a crescent cut to ‘V’ scrolls adds wonderful dimension to your work.  An offset ‘V’ adds flow to your work.

More ‘V’ Scrolls

Fold paper in half.  Roll ends toward outsides.  Pull curls gently out and adjust to look nice.  For closed look, put a tiny dot of glue inside, close to the bottom of the “V”, then press the two sides together; hold until dry.

Simple Quill

Cut to desired length and then roll up from one end.  Gently unroll to desired curl.  The long end can be gently teased with tweezers to conform to your design. (Again, like Christmas ribbon.)

Hearts

Cut paper to length.  Fold paper in half.  Roll ends toward center. Pull curls gently out and adjust to look nice.
Offset Heart: Make fold at least 1/16” to 1/8” off center (pattern will say what to use). Roll as a regular heart.  Add a tiny dot of glue, close heart, and hold till dry.Shape at fold gently.

 ‘C’ Scrolls

Cut paper to length.  Roll ends toward center. Pull curls gently out and adjust to look nice. Adding a dot of glue to the closed ‘C’ scroll helps keep them uniform.
Offset:  I make curls with a corsage pin at the small end and a larger needle at the bigger end. Roll ends toward center. Pull curls gently out and adjust to look nice.

 Rope / Spiral

With left thumb and pointer finger, hold one end of a length of paper at a slight angle at the point end of a corsage pin.  Wrap paper up the pin with your right hand while holding paper in place with the left hand.  Release tension of the left hand to allow the paper to slide off the point end as needed.

HINT:  Ropes look better when you put them in place – if it is only tacked at about every inch along the rope.

 Fancy Quill

A fancy quill is made from a 1/32” wide paper. Length will be in the pattern. Make three spirals at about 2/3rds of the length. VERY gently straighten the ends, so they bend towards the same side. With tweezers, gently make the curve happen as you bring the ends together. (You can adjust at this point.  Slide the ends apart if you see that you need more room for spiral.) Glue ends.

 Confetti Curl

1L & R: Start with a single crescent cut. (Examples were 1 Ό” narrow paper)
2-3: Begin at the crescent cut end and curl paper over pin away from heart. (Notice that two for the        left side and two for the right side curl in the opposite directions.) Wrap as you would a rope to Ό        inch from end.
4: Gently straighten end a little.
5: Curl end, inside towards rope.
6: Loosen and re-curl curl.
Glue: A(s).  The crescent cut end is place even with the bottom edge of the heart point.  The dot of                    glue goes here between the two pieces.  Leave the rest of the rope free of glue.

B(s).  Place a dot of glue just below the curl, and inside next to the heart.  Press the glue dot                    gently against the heart and hold there until glue is set.

Shadow ‘C’ Scroll

Pattern will specify length and width. The second cut length is a quarter inch shorter than the first. Center the shorter piece over the longer and put a small dot of glue in between at center, leaving ends open for curling. Curl with larger needle, loosen, and add glue to shorter piece.  Bring longer curl over top, and then straighten at corners and edges. Hold in place until glue holds.

Shadow ‘S’ Scroll

Pattern will specify length and width. Cut lengths equal. Offset the ends by 1/8 inch and glue at center. Curl as you would an ‘S’ scroll, then loosen both curls. Add glue to shorter inside curl edge, bring longer curl over top, and straighten at corners and edges.  Hold in place until glue holds.
